Fiction / a confession: when it comes to manga, I prefer anime adaptation.

I’m not the biggest TV watcher, this started when I fell madly in love with reading (which only started more than a decade ago, I’m late bloomer, you see). The only times I watch TV is when there’s a new season of MasterChef (not kidding) or occasional news. I usually just check updates via internet (still paying cable ‘cos grandma still prefers TV). Oops, got sidetracked, so in short I don’t dig TV outside of my seasonal anime & my midnight anime binge watch marathon. So when it comes to manga, I prefer anime adaptation. So yeah, I’m not the biggest fan of live actions.

Since I have an option not to watch it, I choose not to…but really, it’s just a matter of preferences!

But I’m saying this as a personal preference; I don’t watch it at my own discretion. But why though? Because there are many times that I didn’t like it. The disappointment outweighs the small number of movies and TV series that I actually enjoyed. I still remember being weirded out by Skip Beat TV drama (Taiwan). It was so strange…but then again Skip Beat was weird to begin with, but a lot of the elements in SB will never successfully transferred from manga to real life. The type of comedy of SB is so exaggerated & this won’t do in IRL setting. It’s just won’t.

Atsushi Ohkubo: And there’s a lot of of, “only in manga” for example, if you tried to make a live action Fairy Tale or Fire Force…

Hiro Mashima: Yeah, there are some things that you might not be able to pull off.

Atsushi Ohkubo: Exactly. So I want to draw s world that works because it’s a manga.

On the other hand, I did enjoy Absolute Boyfriend () and Hanazakari no Kimitachi e () both the Taiwanese version. But those times were rare. There are also webtoons and manhwa series that I’ve already read (or reading!) and some of them already had/have dramas or movies, yet I am still not interested even though the trailer looks great. Even books to movie or TV series just didn’t spark (I did like the Hunger Games movies & Twilight).

I have default expectation when it comes to live action, and movies in particular, are my least favorite due to time constraint.

I’ve also noticed that there are lots of live action movies of shoujo manga and my reaction is pretty much just meh, I don’t dig it. There’s still comfort in just reading manga than watching real people act. And with limited time with movies, I don’t think I’ll be able to enjoy a super concise version of my favorites, as I am the type who love development. So there’s a lot of setbacks. And while maybe some are just my own misgivings, the motivation isn’t really there. And entertainment should not be a hassle, my number one reason why I read the way I do, is take my mind off. So, I choose not to.

It’s not which one is better, the question is what I am most comfortable with, so when it comes to manga, I prefer anime.

But my rejection to live action is not a matter of what is better version, this is very subjective. As I said it’s a matter of preference and I just so happen that I like anime more. I am big animation fan so that’s why. I’m not saying no because they’re bad (well, I didn’t like them, but others said differently, so yeah, this is just me), I just don’t prefer it as a means of adaptation. I know people enjoy it and that’s great to know. They keep producing it because there’s an audience for it! But one of my my golden rules when it comes to entertainment: we need to follow what our hearts desire.
