These awesome characters that are also huge bookworms!

It’s nice to know when some of the characters I read have the same passion as I am. Especially if this character is a favorite of mine. It made them more appealing and interesting to me. One of those that instantly pique my interest is when a character is a bookworm too. I am a bookworm; it’s nice to know that these characters I love also have intense love for reading.

I was gathering characters I’ve read/watch and sadly, it was only few of them that I genuinely liked. Katy of the Lux series is a bookworm (a book blogger at that). But I don’t feel her as much as a reader as I think she’ll be. No offense, it’s just doesn’t feel like she is. Then my sister helped me with the list but all her recommendations are books I haven’t read yet. Then there are characters that I always see reading like Kakashi (from Naruto), Nico Robin (from One Piece) and Kuroko Tetsuya (from Kuroko no Basket). But I decided to narrow it down it top 3 characters that I think are awesome bookworms. And if you’re not a bookworm (random visitors I’m talking to you) maybe their words on why they read may help you start picking up those books! :winks:

  • Shatter Me (Book Series) by Tahereh Mafi

  • Character: Juliette Ferrars
  • Favorite Books: No specifically mentioned (as far as I know or IIRC) as Juliette loved to read anything as a form of escape.
“I spent my life folded between the pages of books. In the absence of human relationships I formed bonds with paper characters. I lived love and loss through stories threaded in history; I experienced adolescence by association. My world is one interwoven web of words, stringing limb to limb, bone to sinew, thoughts and images all together. I am a being comprised of letters, a character created by sentences, a figment of imagination formed through fiction.”
  • Juliette
    Juliette Ferrars – Shatter Me

  • Psycho-Pass (TV Anime Series) by Gen Urobuchi

  • Character: Shogo Makishima
  • Favorite Books: According to his wiki page (which reminds me I need to rewatch it and see him quote books again): he enjoys reading dystopian literature and Shakespeare and thorough knowledge of the Christian Bible.*
Books are not something that you just read words in. They’re also a tool to adjust your senses.
  • Juliette
    Shogo Makishima – Psycho-Pass

  • Tokyo Ghoul (Manga Series) by Sui Ishida

  • Character: Ken Kaneki (special mention goes to Rize & Tsukiyama)

And lastly my favorite bookworm of all is Tokyo Ghoul’s protagonist, Ken Kaneki (sequel, Haise Sasaki). And as a preface, if I haven’t recommend enough, Tokyo Ghoul is a serious treat for everyone who loves emotional torture inflicted on their selves (am I scaring you?). :] It’s pretty obvious to me that the author, Sui Ishida, is a big literature fan as he made several references of book in his manga, like Kafka’s A Crossbreed and The Metamorphosis, Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris and sometimes even mention actual book read by the characters like Scarlet Letters by C.S. Lewis.

Ken Kaneki said it himself in his prominent quote in the entire series:

I’m a college student who likes to read, like you could find anywhere…I’m not the protagonist of a novel or anything. But if, for argument’s sake, you were to write a story with me in the lead role…it would certainly be a tragedy.

He got this habit through his father and the reason why is:

When I followed the sentences in the books my father had been reading, it felt like I was having a conversation with my dead father. It was strangely calming.

And that’s it. That’s my top 3 favorite bookworm characters! How about you any favorite characters that are also a bookworm like you? Care to share it with me?

19 Responses to My Favorite Bookworm Characters!

  1. Wow I totally forgot that Juliette from Shatter Me likes to read haha. When I think of her, I always picture her as someone who could kill a living thing with one touch. This is hard…I don’t think I have a favorite character. I probably do but I can’t think of one off top of my head.

  2. I love when characters are bookworms!

  3. MAKISHIMA!!! He’s one of the best villains I have ever come across. And he made me feel like an inadequate bookworm, with all his quoting of classic texts.

The other two characters I don’t know as well. I’ve read Shatter Me but still need to continue the series. Tokyo Ghoul I need to attempt again. So many people love that series.

Yes, Makishima is one of those villains who is really morally ambiguous (at least on me he was).

Please read TG, it is so, so awesome. 😀

  4. Kezia says:

Ikr! I didn’t feel anything toward Kaneki when I started the first chapter but then BOOM. He mentioned books and I’M JUST SOLD.

Haha, I kinda forgot about Makishima (HOW COULD I??) But I admit I felt accomplished whenever I heard him spewing / quoting people from my sociology textbook and I remember what theories they came up with. Or was that Kougami as well? I guess both of them? xD

  5. Shannelle C. says:

I don’t recognize much of the anime ones, and so, all I know is Juliette! But gosh, Mitchii, how did you add that circle image?

  6. I love it when characters are bookworms (or have anything to do with blogging), but only when I feel like they truly are . Sometimes it seems like the author added that part for the idea, but it never shows.

I think the best bookworm I can think off is Hermione and Liesel (from the book thief)

  8. I adore books where the protagonist is a reader, my favorites are Liesel from The Book Thief, Matilda from Roald Dahl’s book, Hermoine and of course, Juliette.

Like you I was pretty excited when I found that the MC in the Lux series was a blogger and a reader but that turned out to be a huge disappointed because the whole angle felt forced.
    Brilliant post, Mitchii! 🙂

  9. I adore all of Juliette’s bookish quotes! And she speaks so eloquently, too.

And the other two, I’m not familiar with because I don’t watch enough anime or read enough manga and I suck. 🙁

    • Mitchii G. says:

You should try them if you have some time to spare, they are very dark and equally awesome. Juliette vocabulary is very wide, might got from reading tons of books. 😀

  10. Juliette likes to read?! I NEVER KNEW. It’s been a while since I read Shatter Me, though, so I guess I should re-read it and continue on with the series again so I can get to know Juliette’s character better. But I remember not liking her much in the first book. 🙁

Oh man, I loved watching the banter between Makshima and Kougami. Both of them have such amazing chemistry and intellect! And I think I like Makishima’s character a little bit more now that I know he likes reading dystopian literature, hehe. Which reminds me, I still need to watch the Psycho-Pass movie. Been dying for that to release online. (I need more Ko and Akane. :P)

We can’t live without tragic stories, Mitchii. We just can’t! Kaneki is definitely a bookworm favorite. And I love Rize too! I can’t wait for her to make an appearance in :re. Not to mention, Haise’s reading glasses are adorable. :B I remember seeing The Metamorphosis mentioned in Tokyo Ghoul, but I didn’t know there were other real books mentioned in there, too. Oops. Really need to get on re-reading it, but so many other manga are grabbing my attention. ><

Other bookworm-loving characters, hmm? Hermione from Harry Potter is definitely one, and Annabeth from Percy Jackson. And Light from Death Note; Lelouch from Code Geass; Kuroko from KnB (they mentioned that he's quite a bookworm :D). Just to name a few!

    • Mitchii G. says:

She loves to read. One time she & Warner talked about books, haha. Yes, Their dialogues were deep and intelligent & honestly sometimes hard to keep up for the lil ‘ol me. Haha, was hoping for movie release here but we have to wait for the DVD release, it is when will get to watch it online.

Haha, I love Kaneki/Haise. In fact there are few bookish people on TG (wc made me love this series even more). Kaneki was holding that book. Even Hide has a poster of book/movie I totally forgot. It has led me to think that Ishida is bookworm himself. The concept bleeds too much in his series.

I was about to include Kuroko and the other but opted to highlight just these three. :3
